How to Measure Furniture for a Clamp-On Cat Scratching Post

Quick answer: measure more than the visible edge thickness. A clamp-on cat scratching post needs a flat, sturdy mounting edge, enough unobstructed depth for both clamp pads, stable furniture, and open space for your cat to approach and stretch. For the Shelfside post, the mounting edge must be no more than 35 mm (1.38 in) thick and provide at least 50 mm (1.97 in) of flat contact depth.

Use the steps below at the exact installation point. Do not rely on a measurement taken from another side of the same desk or shelf: trim, drawers, brackets, and reinforcing rails can change the usable space.

1. Pick the exact mounting point

Choose the precise shelf, desk, console, cabinet, or table edge where the post would sit. Open every nearby drawer and door. Look for cable trays, metal frames, aprons, brackets, decorative lips, and hardware on the underside.

Then check the approach from your cat’s height. The post should not be hidden behind a chair or squeezed into a route where a person, door, or vacuum will hit it. 2. Measure the full edge thickness

Hold a rigid ruler, tape measure, or caliper perpendicular to the edge and measure from the top contact surface to the bottom contact surface. Measure the thickest part the clamp must span, including any front lip or trim.

3. Measure the flat contact depth

Thickness tells you whether the clamp can open far enough; contact depth tells you whether its pads can sit flat. On both the top and underside, measure inward from the outer edge to the first obstruction or curve.

Shelfside requires at least 50 mm (1.97 in) of flat depth. A tabletop may be deep overall while a drawer box or support rail leaves only a narrow mounting strip underneath. Use the smaller usable depth of the two surfaces, not the total depth of the furniture.

• Do not count a rounded or beveled section as flat contact area.
• Do not mount over a seam, loose veneer, padded trim, or lifting finish.
• Avoid glass or fragile composite edges unless the furniture maker explicitly permits clamped accessories.

4. Check the furniture, not only the edge

Place one hand on the proposed mounting point and gently test the furniture for rocking, flexing, or tipping. Tighten the furniture’s own fasteners if appropriate. A lightweight folding table, rolling cart, or loosely assembled shelf can remain unsafe even when its dimensions fit.

5. Confirm clearance for the cat and the room

Mark the proposed post position with removable painter’s tape. Check that your cat can walk up, turn, and extend without hitting a wall, lamp, curtain, chair, or storage bin. Keep the setup away from heaters, cords, breakable objects, and narrow human walkways.

Placement matters after the measurements pass. A spot near an existing scratching target, resting area, window route, or room entrance is usually easier for a cat to discover than an isolated corner. 6. Record the result and do a final fit check

Take one side photo and one underside photo, ideally with the ruler visible. Save these six details:

1. exact furniture item and mounting point;
2. maximum edge thickness;
3. minimum flat contact depth;
4. top and underside shape;
5. surface material and condition;
6. any rocking, flexing, obstruction, or clearance concern.

Before installation, clean the contact area according to the furniture maker’s instructions. Tighten the clamp only as directed, test the post gently, and inspect the furniture contact points after initial use.
